Inverters and batteries bought on their own aren’t plug-in kits. Each ENA register entry covers a complete kit, so only a listed kit is compliant (DESNZ product specification). Batteries with a built-in inverter need an electrician.

How we work it out

What the numbers mean

  • Kits: today’s cheapest in-stock price ÷ total panel power in watts-peak (Wp), from the maker’s spec or the retailer’s listing.
  • Inverters: price ÷ rated AC output in watts, from the spec sheet of a kit that uses the same model, or the product name.
  • Batteries and power stations: price ÷ capacity in kWh, from the maker’s spec. Products without a published capacity in our data are left out.

Delivery, mounting extras and fitting aren’t included. Some retailers sell the same product in bundles; we rank the cheapest in-stock one.

Before you buy

Why cheapest per watt isn’t always best

Plug-in kits can feed at most 800 W into your home (SI 2026/848). Panels bigger than that still help on dull days, but on bright days the extra is clipped. So a 1,200 Wp kit doesn’t make 50% more than an 800 Wp one.

Where the panels go matters too. Use the calculator for the cost of each kWh a kit will make at your home, or the bundle vs build tool to see what the panels in a kit cost you.

Price per watt: questions

What is a good price per watt for plug-in solar?

Across the 16 ENA-compliant kits in stock today, the median is 91p per Wp of panel. The cheapest is the UKSOL Pro Max 1260W Hybrid Mount Kit at 76p per Wp (£963.04 for 1,260 Wp), and the dearest is 148p. Anything under the median is good value on this measure.

Are bigger kits cheaper per watt?

Usually. In stock today, one-panel compliant kits have a median of 119p per Wp and two-panel kits 84p. The inverter, plug and cabling cost about the same whatever the panel size, so they add more per watt to a small kit.

Is price per watt the best way to compare kits?

It’s a quick first filter, but not the whole story. Every plug-in kit is capped at 800 W of AC output, so panel watts above that are clipped on sunny days. And where the panels go matters as much as their size: an upright balcony kit makes less than the same kit tilted towards the sun. For the cost of each kWh you’ll actually get, use the calculator.

How much does a plug-in solar microinverter cost on its own?

The cheapest 800 W microinverter in stock today is the Hoymiles HiFlow HF-800-WB Microinverter at £118.80. A standalone inverter isn’t a compliant plug-in kit, though: each ENA register entry covers a whole kit.

What does battery storage cost per kWh?

The cheapest plug-in battery per kWh in stock today is the Indevolt BK1600 Plug-in Home Battery at £244 per kWh of capacity, against £416 for the median of the 4 we can rank. Batteries with built-in inverters fall outside the plug-in solar rules and need an electrician.

Where do the prices come from?

Our own checks of UK retailers. Each product shows its cheapest in-stock price right now. Products that are out of stock everywhere, or that we don’t have a rated output or capacity for, are left out rather than guessed.
