Panels, mounting and cables
Not priced: enter what you found
Take away the parts we can price, and the panels, mounting and cables in this kit cost you
£58065p per Wp
If you can buy 2 × 445 W panels, a mount and cables for less than that, building your own costs less.
Parts bought separately aren’t a kit on the ENA register, so they aren’t compliant plug-in solar however they’re put together. Connecting them would need an electrician, which we haven’t costed. Delivery isn’t included either.

How we compare
How we match the parts
- Inverter: the model on the kit maker’s spec sheet, matched to a standalone product by model code. No match means we say so; we don’t substitute a lookalike.
- Battery: a standalone battery within 5% of the kit’s capacity, the same maker’s first.
- Panels: we don’t list standalone panels yet, so we can’t match wattage or type. We show what’s left of the kit price instead, and you can enter your own figure.
All prices are today’s cheapest in stock at the retailers we track. Delivery, mounting extras and fitting aren’t included.
Before you build
A kit is more than its parts
A compliant kit is registered as a complete set. Each ENA register entry covers the whole kit configuration, not just the inverter (DESNZ product specification). Panels and an inverter bought separately aren’t on the register, however well they match.
The plug-in rules also cap a kit at 800 W of AC output (SI 2026/848) and require a moulded plug with a small fuse. A kit comes with all of that tested together.
Check any kit on the compliance checker, or compare kits by value on the price per watt leaderboard.
Bundle vs build: questions
Is it cheaper to buy plug-in solar panels and an inverter separately?
Across the 14 compliant kits whose inverter we can also find on its own, that inverter is about 17% of the kit price. The rest, a median of 74p per Wp, pays for the panels, mounting, cables and plug. If you can buy panels and a mount for less than that, building your own costs less, but it won’t be a compliant plug-in kit.
Is a DIY plug-in solar setup legal?
Not as plug-in solar. Each entry on the ENA register covers a whole kit configuration, not just the inverter, so a microinverter and panels bought separately aren’t a compliant plug-in kit however they’re put together. To connect them you’d need an electrician to install them as a fixed system.
How much is a plug-in microinverter on its own?
The cheapest in stock today is the Hoymiles HiFlow HF-800-WB Microinverter at £118.80 from Electricals Online. Most kits we track use an 800 W microinverter from APsystems, Hoymiles or EcoFlow.
Is a solar kit with a battery cheaper than buying them separately?
The Thunder Bolt Plus 460W Kit with Battery costs £1,549.99; the Thunder Bolt 460W Plug-In Solar Kit plus the Thunder Vault 1.92 kWh Plug-In Home Battery costs £1,599.97, so the bundle saves £49.98. The Thunder Bolt Plus 920W Kit with Battery costs £1,749.99; the Thunder Bolt 920W Plug-In Solar Kit plus the Thunder Vault 1.92 kWh Plug-In Home Battery costs £1,799.98, so the bundle saves £49.99. Kits with a built-in battery fall outside the plug-in rules and need an electrician either way.
Why can’t I price the panels here?
We don’t list standalone solar panels yet, only kits, inverters and batteries. So we show what the panels effectively cost inside each kit, and you can enter a price you’ve found to finish the comparison.
How do you decide which inverter is the same?
We read the inverter model from the kit maker’s spec sheet and look for a standalone product with the same model code, such as EZ1-M or HMS-800-2WB. If we can’t find one, we say so rather than guessing, and you can pick any in-stock microinverter to compare with instead.
